Indygo Artwear - Made from Hand-Painted Fabrics

Since 1992, Cape Town-based designer Elana van der Walt has been capturing the essence of ‘girlyness’ – with the personal touch of original handpainting, which makes each garment a unique work of art. Elana’s design inspiration is drawn from her surroundings, in particular her special group of models - among which are her own daughters.  Thank heaven for little girls!  She thinks in colors… Her work reflects a free-spirited attitude and upholds timeless values, aesthetic qualities which are so rare in this technological age.  The 'butterfly' logo symbolizes the freedom attained through creativity as well as her commitment to using natural fibers and environment-friendly inks.

Artists hand-paint every single cloth, so unlike the rest of the industry, they work with large 'canvasses' as opposed to rolls of printed fabric.

This trademark handpainting aspect is labor-intensive, providing much needed employment in Cape Town. Besides its timeless artistic appeal, their customers like the comfortable styling in pure cotton, easy care & durability.

The fabrics are mainly pure cotton single jersey, rib & cotton lycra, with some details in mesh, tulle & chiffon.

Most frequently asked question -‘‘Don’t the colors wash out?”  If the colors faded, so would the company... Their specialized inks are self-curing once completely dry.
